DRM is a joke. When will they learn that the only people DRM irritates are people who would consider actually buying the product?

A bit of a hijack - am I reading that right.. if I want to play Assassin's Creed 2 (a supposedly offline game) I'd have to be online all the time... and use bandwidth constantly just to verify that the game legit bought is actually a legit copy? And that all my save games will be on their server's? So if my net goes down, or their server' go down.. I won't be able to play a game I should be able to as it s supposedly a offline game?
fft. Looks like I won't be pre-ordering it.. while I generally am online all the time.. my net can be flakey.. and I don't trust other companies to have their server's up and running 100% of the time... (look st Sony & PS3.. lolz). And I don't see why I should have to crack a legit copy just to play it how it should...

Yeah you read it right. A little askew from OT, but you wouldn't believe how PO'd I was, when, I bought a retail copy of AvP3, got it home, went to install it....
and I couldn't without having a Steam account. The Effin' game has to be activated thru and by Steam. You can't install it unless Steam gets it's hands on it first... Unless you go the "other" route.
I have nothing against Steam, but....it's not even an option to install w/o the steam client, online play or not. Sure you can play the game offline, but it must be launched via the steam client....and that requires you to log into your steam account, go in offline mode...blah blah blah etc. etc. etc.

Aye. Your net hitches for 5 seconds while you're about to assassinate someone? You must wait those 5 seconds before you can continue.
If your net crashes, and doesn't come back for 5 hours... you must stay in-game for 5 hours, or you lose your progress since the last save-point.
Oh, oh, and don't forget that pirates don't give two damns about that online thingie - they can just bypass it.

Offline games requiring internet always make me laugh. Good job Ubisoft, good job. Not only did your master plan fail against pirates, you managed to screw over people who actually bought the game.

And don't forget they are also putting off people buying their games in the first place with this rubbish.
As I am now likely to not buy Assassin's Creed 2 like I was planning. This whole DRM and having to be online and save games reliant on UbiSoft server's being up... really puts me off buying the game now.

Yes, that's absolutely ridiculous. When I read that the DRM was already cracked I /facepalmed. Surely they could have come up with a better outcome to prevent, or at least lower piracy.

So far, it's painfully obvious that companies that have zero DRM such as Sins of a Solar Empire (Ironclad? I forget.) have had the most success. Selling more copies than expected even through piracy unhindered...

lolz, the answer is obvious - lower the friggen cost of the game = more ppl buying and less piracy.
You ask ppl who pirate movies music, games, etc - and most of them will say it's due to the cost and that if things were cheaper they'd buy them. In fact I believe that it's been shown that music piracy has dropped since you started to be able to buy music online fairly cheaply (99c per track or such, which is like $17.82 for a cd.. vs $29-39 if bought as a cd from a store).
They haven't worked it out - DRM will always get cracked and be worthless at stopping software pirates. All it has ever done is cause grief for ppl who buy legit. Yet they keep using it, keep trying different forms.. and keep crying as ppl pirate and crack their games (for 2 reason's ow.. expensive games, and ridiculous drm..).
Not that I ever see this changing in the near future anyways *shrugs*
but lolz @ Ubisoft.. their precious new DRM cracked within a day. Sux 2 b u!

Here's a solution; rather than make DRM, how about reducing the cost of new games from $100+, to $40-50?
Sure, profits might drop, but at least you'll get more sales. Unless of course, piracy doesn't ACTUALLY have as big an effect as people say...

Big publishing companies don't see as much profit from PC sales as they do console sales, if the gamers then want the prices of PC games to be cut the publishers probably won't even bother any more and just release their games on the console from now on.

Why would i ever pay even 40-50 $ when i can download it for free? Oh and why would i give a damn if it is legit or not? It`s not like my neighbor is going to tip me to the police "uhm.. yes, i would like to report my first door criminal for using pirated software!"

Because one day or another, someone will ask himself "Why should I pay for my new car?" and instead of buying it, he will steal your ride.
Or "Why should I earn money? I can just rob some stupid sack." and you'll get assaulted in the nearby dark alley. Oh, and don't bother going to the police. Or you will be a hypocrite.

Prime example of linear thinking native to narrow minded people and computers..
So, what you basically said is that i should buy a game in shop and fork 50$ so that tomorrow someone won`t steal my car? Get lost.. Fall into the system that sucks your blood whenever it can. Be my guest. There is a big difference in these examples, and you know it - just dramatizing much.

The PSN didn't go down. Unlike Live, which was down for the holidays in the not so distant past...

No, what I'm basically thinking is that the rule called "I don't care about paying, I'm not going to" is going to bite you in the butt in the future. Ironical, if you ask me, because then you won't be able to complain. Hypocrite.
Also, since when asking someone to pay for one's hard work and devotion means "sucking blood"? You are sucking someone's blood when you work and ask for money. And your blood is sucked when you pay for your clothes, your fuel, your electricity bills.

I dunno. over the last, say, 9 years? the quality of PC game development (or it's direction) has hit some sort of barrier made of shit. Either the devs are losing talent, getting to old, or they need to get some gonads and fight for themselves and the games they are creating(more than they have to now).
This throwing out unfinished Beta product and charging "Triple A" title prices has got to stop. I can see how the Industry is grooming younger gamers and they(gamers) need to open their EYES and put a stop to it. The money-grab and it's greed are worse than the pirates.
meh..
